'Mobile Publics' Conference & Multimedia Exhibition: 'Connected Communities'


A first for the Asia-Pacific region, Urban Screens Melbourne 08 is celebrating Federation Square as a modern multimedia precinct, taking its place among an emerging global network of urban screens venues. Together they are creating new opportunities for global community building, multiculturalism, and public education and engagement in the consideration of environmental, cultural and social sustainability. Urban Screens Melbourne 08 marks the global launch of the International Urban Screens Association (IUSA).

USM08: ‘Mobile Publics’ conference expored the changing relations between urban screens, culture and cities. By engaging a wide range of leading stakeholders in media and public space, USM08: ‘Mobile Publics’ promoted new multi-disciplinary frameworks for understanding innovative uses of technology, media and art in contemporary cities.

USM08 Multimedia Exhibition: ‘Connected Communities’ presented an exciting public program of demonstrations and creative experiments on Federation Square’s screens and architectural facades, showcasing the wide range of possible content for urban screens, from live streaming, film, video and animation programs, multimedia projections, public discussions and interactive art.

Organisation: Urban Screens Melbourne 08 has been coordinated collaboratively by Mirjam Struppek and Glenn Harding. It has been hosted and produced by Federation Square and the University of Melbourne. The exhibition and poster session has been curated by Mirjam Struppek and the concept of the conference has been developed by Dr. Scott McQuire and Associate Professor Nikos Papastergiadis.
